Intervention
The photographic series Intervention examines the transformation of Lithuania’s major rivers, the Nemunas and the Neris, amid intensive urbanisation and bridge construction in Kaunas. Within the urban environment, a bridge functions as a connecting element that sustains the life of the city, yet the project asks what the cost of this connection is. Bridge construction reveals how infrastructure created to establish vital human connections can simultaneously disrupt relationships with nature, including the river’s natural ecosystem and the riverbed relief formed over thousands of years.
The work is based on the idea of the river as a living yet “crushed” organism. To visualise the damage it undergoes, the artist uses a vertical, 90-degree drone view that turns the river into an analytical map. Moving away from traditional landscape representation, Pocevičius employs the principle of NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) as a scientific metaphor.
Areas of water undergoing visible excavation and reshaping of the riverbed are digitally coloured in intense red and orange, creating the image of a “bleeding wound”. Concrete structures and construction zones remain in their natural colours. Intervencija records how a once powerful natural force is transformed into a strategically convenient element of urban infrastructure.
