Biography
Cooper & Gorfer is an artist duo formed by Sarah Cooper (US / SE, b. 1974) and Nina Gorfer (AT, b. 1979), independent artists based in Sweden. Rooted in photography, their practice has developed into a tactile, layered visual language spanning hybrid collaged compositions and video-based work. These elements are assembled into portraits of women and immersive visual worlds that address identity, memory, dislocation, resistance and transformation. Collage functions as both method and meaning: fragmented surfaces reflect the multiplicity of identity and allow personal narratives to intersect with broader sociopolitical contexts.
Their work has been exhibited internationally at Hasselblad Center, Fotografiska, the National Museum of Photography in Copenhagen and NOMA, and is represented in collections including the National Gallery of Iceland and the Hunter Museum. Cooper & Gorfer have received a MacDowell Fellowship and produced award-winning monographs, including “I Know Not These My Hands” (2017). Their film “Between These Folded Walls, Utopia” was shortlisted for the Tempo Documentary Film Festival. They are Fuji Ambassadors.
