And the Water Went away

On June 6, 2023, Russian occupying forces committed an unprecedented act of military crime and ecocide – the dam of the Kahovka Hydroelectric Power Station was blown up. The explosion of the Kahovka HPP had unbelievably horrific consequences not only for the south of Ukraine but also affected the entire country as a whole. On August 16, Ukrhydroenergo filed an emergency request to raise the water level in two reservoirs on the Dnipro River – the water level in the Kyiv reservoir became extremely low. Thus, residents of regions far from the disaster were able to directly observe the consequences of the terrorist act by the Russians. The series of works was filmed in August 2023 on the shore of the Kyiv reservoir. The emphasis on individual elements of the image is aimed at stimulating reflections on the topic of humanity’s direct dependence on natural resources. It demonstrates the fluidity and instability of the latter due to human actions. And it points to our increased vulnerability and helplessness in the face of the consequences of the catastrophe.
