Images and Fear
The lecture explores society’s relationship with images, with a particular focus on photography. What a society allows to be photographed – and what it considers unacceptable or forbidden – can reveal a great deal about the society itself.
As opportunities to take photographs expand and digital image-making devices become increasingly widespread, various restrictions are also on the rise. These restrictions reveal deeper underlying fears that images can expose or evoke.
Drawing on examples from Estonia, the lecture demonstrates that photography has not lost its power to shock. Yet what provokes such reactions, and how strongly an image affects us, depends on the specific context in which it is created, used, and interpreted.
