On Being

“Either – or. Creation is also destruction, even the most nihilistic kind. If I had to choose between a potato and Venice, I would not hesitate to choose the potato.”
— Arvydas Šliogeris

The philosopher Arvydas Šliogeris coined the term photosophy (from the Greek, “wisdom of light”), seemingly referring to a way of thinking through images. Photographic images “illuminate” real situations without articulating causal relationships. The photographer is an attentive observer, selecting situations and attempting to construct a kind of visual narrative.

I am interested in change, transformation—or more precisely, in the signs of transformation, primarily contrasts and repetitions.

Another important 20th-century philosopher, Gilles Deleuze, speaking of change, noted that repetition and difference are conceptual tools of thought. They do not exist as objects in themselves but are perceived by the observer. If differences form the basis of typologies, then repetitions construct the typologies themselves. At the same time, they function as generators of meaning.

While working on typological series over time, I came to understand that everything repeats—but always differently. The smallest details become the most important.

This exhibition is about the constant transformation of being, visible in the simplest of things—even, as the philosopher noted, in a potato.
