Biography
Vitalijus Butyrinas (1947-2020) is one of the most original creators on the stage of the so-called Lithuanian school of photography. “The author moved away from the reportage creative method typical of many of his colleagues and started creating montages in which the original photographic image was used only as a starting material. In the beginning, Butyrin used montage, enhanced contrast of black-and-white photographs and aesthetics close to graphics in order to achieve clarity and conciseness of compositions. The peculiarities of the visual form of the photographs and the fantastic plots of the works, their symbolism became the most important features of Butyrin’s work, marking the most mature works created in the 1980s and 1990s and their cycles.” – Tomas Pabedinskas.
