Good Gravy!
“Good evening and welcome to ‘GOOD GRAVY!’, a fine dining experience where photography meets the culinary arts. Through +5 years of meticulous experimentation in the kitchen and in the darkroom. At the heart of this project lies the manipulation of photographic film using food products and cooking techniques, resulting in brewed, boiled, fried, baked, cured, submerged, and fermented images using homemade recipes (including the first-ever sourdough bread film).
With high doses of self-awareness and humor, this project was originally conceived as a proclamation of creative joy as a radical act of survival. In these unprecedented times, marked by global wars, famine, climate crisis, and social polarisation, finding time to experience happiness through free experimentation and playful artistic creation becomes a powerful statement against the capitalist status quo.
The core idea is that absurd acts (such as baking photographic film and taking photos with it) and the comedic relief in performing them is a revolutionary behaviour with no other purpose than promoting joy and playfulness in the face of chaos. In this project, the ‘darkroom kitchen’ (as with regular cooking spaces) becomes a safe space where new forms of connection, care, and collectivity can be rehearsed.
To celebrate the 2025 edition of IPMA, Carlos has prepared a tasting menu featuring 4 bites and 1 pairing cocktail featuring 10 images elaborated with some of the most special recipes crafted so far.”
